Georgetown Women's Ultimate

Played a sport in high school?  Looking for something new?
Besides being a great place to meet new people from all corners of the University, we can help you fulfill your dream of chasing down a spinning piece of plastic, going horizontal a fraction of a second before it hits the ground, to come up triumphantly with the disc as the sideline erupts and your defender cries a little inside.  At least, that's the kind of dream we have.  Live it, love it, lay it out...

FAQ:

What's Ultimate Frisbee?

So you know what a frisbee is, now picture soccer and football shoved together into one game, add some ridiculous people and subtract the refs, and you've got Ultimate.  It combines skilled throws with athleticism and good field sense.  It's been around for longer than you think, and is probably more widespread than you'd think too.  This is what we aspire to.

What's the commitment for club Ultimate?
Unlike intramurals, we travel and compete against other collegiate teams.  Unlike varsity teams, we don't stake our lives on winning and losing, nor do we practice as long or as hard.

How often does the team travel?
We usually go to 3 or 4 tournaments per semester; some are close by while other require long drives.  Since the college ultimate season starts in the spring, we're more serious about making it to tournaments in the spring semester, though we do play year round.

What are practices like?
Check out the practice page for times and locations.  Practices consist of running, throwing drills, cutting drills, running plays, scrimmaging and any weird games we can think of.  We're laid back, but still manage to get things done.  Anyone can come check out a practice, we encourage everyone who's interested to come out.

What if I can't always make practice?
We expect all players who want to travel to tournaments to come to practice regularly.  That said, if you can't make a practice due to another commitment, let a captain know and you'll be fine.  If you have a class during practice, do your best to switch around your schedule to fit everything in.  If that's impossible, talk to us and we'll work something out.

What if I'm bad?  Can I still play?

Virtually no one played ultimate in high school.  Yes, you'll always get to play - we don't expect incoming players to know anything, and if you come to practice regularly and try, we'll turn you into a frisbee machine and you're guaranteed playing time in tournaments.

What about a coach?
We only have the coolest coach around, Mr. Jon Jay, no biggie.  Self-professed "Best Thrower in the District" and just generally awesome dude.  Jon joined us in the Fall of 08 and we've been lean, mean, fighting pumas ever since.

What's a Foya?
Huck: v) to chuck a disc waaay down the field, usually to the endzone.
Hoya: n) you.
Fuckin' Hoya.  Huckin' Foya.  Brilliant.

What can I do to start getting better now?
Shoot the captains an email (Beth at bmk26@georgetown.edu and Alisha at ask54@georgetown.edu) and we'll put you on the foya mailing list to remind you of our practice times, the random times that we end up throwing around on the front lawns, the student activities fair in the fall, parties etc etc... In the meantime, grab a frisbee and a friend and start throwing.  And get ready for some fun!
